The story of Lenoss Medical begins with CEO and President, Dom Messerli, a spine industry veteran with 30 years of experience at large medical device corporations, thinking there must be a better way of repairing vertebral compression fractures due to Osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis can quietly weaken your bones over time-especially the ones in your spine called vertebrae. When these bones become too fragile, they can collapse resulting in a vertebral compression fracture, or VCF. The fractures can be extremely painful because the collapsed bone puts stress on your spine and throws it out of balance. Untreated, VCF’s may lead to severe back pain, additional spinal fractures, immobility and therefore decreased morbidity and mortality.
The current standard of care, the injection of PMMA cement into the fractured osteoporotic vertebral body offers a fast and consistent remedy for a patient who is in pain following a vertebral compression fracture. However, it is not without risk for the patient with recent studies citing incidents of cement leakage out of the vertebral body occurring upwards of 40%.
Lenoss Medical developed the OstoPearl implant which is made entirely of 100% cortical bone. Resembling a small string of pearls, the OsteoPearl implant features flexible links between each “pearl” to form a 3-D Cortical Structural Matrix. As with any allograft bone implant, OsteoPearl is osteoconductive, providing a scaffold for ongrowth and/or ingrowth of newly formed bone.
Commercially available with nearly 300 successful completed surgeries, Lenoss Medical is scaling sales and marketing to bring their technology to more patients.
