Azalea Vision – The First Smart Lens That Turns Tears into Real-Time Health Data
Azalea Vision is redefining how to correct, manage, and interact with health and vision. Born as a spin-off from imec and Ghent University, Azalea Vision is developing the first medical-grade smart lens platform that adapts, connects, and responds in real time—bringing a new level of intelligence to ophthalmic care.
Azalea’s lens-embedded system combines adaptive optics, embedded microelectronics, and NFC connectivity to deliver both therapeutic and diagnostic functions within a contact lens format.
The first product is being developed for tear-fluid biomarker monitoring (Na⁺/K⁺, glucose, lactate, pH, etc.), enabling remote patient management for heart failure, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease, as well as advanced sports-performance tracking.
The next product targets keratoconus and corneal irregularities, conditions that severely degrade visual quality and currently rely on suboptimal scleral lenses or invasive surgery. This Smart Lens is designed to restore near-20/20 visual acuity by dynamically filtering aberrations through a controlled aperture system.
What sets Azalea Vision apart is the convergence of medical optics, digital health, and microengineering into a clinically focused, scalable solution. Rather than positioning the product as a tech concept, Azalea’s smart lens is built for real-world clinical impact, starting with a first-in-human trial planned for 2026.
